Progress Together has announced the appointment of Sophie Hulm as CEO.

With Sophie at the helm, the membership organisation will continue the drive to level the playing field in UK financial services.

Sophie, who herself is the daughter of a working class father, is working to increase the number of people from a range of backgrounds at senior levels in the financial sector.

Statistics show that financial services employees from working class backgrounds progress 25% slower than those from more privileged upbringings, with zero link to job performance.

Sophie said: “This isn’t only about social justice, it’s about our UK financial services sector getting the competitive edge against global counterparts, in retaining talent and adequately representing the customers it serves. This is about diversity of thought and greater innovation at the top.”

Over 30 firms have already committed to working with Progress Together to improve socio-economic diversity at management level.

Sophie said: “It’s a privilege to work in a sector where so many individuals understand this and feel motivated and passionate to drive change to create a more inclusive environment. I am thrilled to be working alongside these firms and taking Progress Together forward during this exciting time for our industry.”

Vincent Keaveny, former Lord Mayor of the City of London 2021/22 and Chair of Progress Together, said: “I’m delighted as Chair of Progress Together that we are appointing Sophie as our CEO. Her background and experience will be hugely valuable as Progress Together drives change in the UK financial services industry.”

Progress Together guides members through collecting and analysing data to help them break down barriers to diversity. This is achieved through a programme of in-person and virtual events, access to toolkits, and a community of like-minded peers to share experiences and ideas.
